Vehicle Rental Inspection Checklist: Before Pickup and Return
A five-minute inspection protects both renter and owner. Complete it in good light, record existing condition and resolve unclear terms before leaving the pickup point.
Identity and documents
Confirm that the registration details match the vehicle and that the agreed insurance and PUC information is available. Carry a valid driving licence for the vehicle class and your accepted identity proof.
MoRTH guidance recognises transport documents available through DigiLocker or mParivahan for enforcement purposes, subject to the applicable conditions. A rental provider may still specify its own verification process, so confirm that separately.

Two-wheeler condition
Check tyres, brakes, throttle return, clutch where applicable, lights, indicators, horn, mirrors, stand and visible leaks. Photograph every existing scratch and panel mark.
Check the helmet’s condition, fit and standard mark. Do not use a damaged or poorly fitting helmet. Test the controls at very low speed before joining traffic.
Car condition
Walk around the car and record panels, glass, wheels and tyres. Test lights, horn, wipers, air conditioning, seat belts, reverse aids and dashboard warnings. Confirm fuel and odometer readings.
Ask what to do after a puncture, warning light, breakdown or collision. Do not authorize repairs without following the agreed support process unless immediate safety requires action.
Return procedure
Return at the confirmed time and fuel level. Photograph condition, odometer and handover acknowledgement. Ask when and how the deposit will be released.
If damage or an extra charge is claimed, request the relevant inspection evidence and calculation rather than relying on a verbal amount.
